When the bustle of tourists in Downtown San Diego is replaced by the flailing of fandoms, and the street signs around the Convention Center have changed from English to Dothraki (not Klingon, like past years), you know it’s time for San Diego Comic-Con 2013!
Wednesday the 17th kicked off this year’s Preview Night, and energy was high as this year’s Comic-Con sprang into motion with a flurry of activity. Many attendees treat the three-hour preview as a time to scan the showroom floor, mentally map places to hit on the later dates, and, of course, buy the must-have items that may be gone by Con’s end. There’s not a lot of cosplaying -- although there is some -- and vendors as well as professionals sometimes leave their posts, taking the chance to experience the convention in a way they might not get to over the next four days.
As we’ve been proudly announcing over recent months, deviantART is again sponsoring Artists’ Alley. The artists get a kick out of our comfy chairs, carpeting, goodie bags, and electronic charging stations, and we’re honored to be a small part of making their experience a comfortable one. Deviants swing by our booth at the far end of the alley to log onto deviantART, play with our drawing tools, pick up some schwag, draw for an audience, and generally relax with what the convention is all about, at least in our minds -- artistic explosions of awesomeness!
Even though the day was short, we were able to get some great quotes and snapshots from artists who stopped by our booth!
“The worst day at Comic-Con is better than the best day at work.”
-- Scott Lobdell, "Uncanny X-Men," posing here with staffer damphyr and a future comic artist.
Deviant omtay drew staffer aunjuli, and she uploaded her art, Buddie Jewl, here!
“I always love the energy of Comic-Con! It makes me leave inspired to create more.”
-- RyanOdagawa
"I love that I can share my art and be connected to those who create art in the same style as me. It’s a great way to promote and connect with a community who shares my interests. My favorite part of Comic-Con is the panels & the swag. DeviantART has the best panels & swag!" --kaosz777
Peter Beagle and an image made using every single word in the "Last Unicorn" novel.
Here are a few Cosplayers who stopped by our booth!
A beautiful Lady Tardis from "Doctor Who"!
We're not quite sure what this interesting gentleman is. Any guesses?
No fandom. Just someone who loves to make costumes!
A cheerful Sora from "Kingdom Hearts."
Robin from "Batman"!
And finally, many of the dA staffers working Preview Night posed for a picture! Some were too shy. We will catch them off guard later...
Here's to a great con to come! We can't wait to see what all it has to offer.
Tomorrow is our first panel, so if you're in town, be sure to head to Room 2 on the Upper Level to check out our "How-To: Motion Books" at 12:15 pm!
If you're not able to make it out this year, have you heard about anything we absolutely need to scope out and report back?
