Hello, Beta Testers!

It's been quiet in here for a while, but in the interest of kicking things back up, I'd like to announce a quick minor beta test for the purposes of bug-catching before a wide release.

As you know, recently, User and Group profiles got the New Thumbnail Grid update to their Galleries and Faves that has been live on Browse for a little less than a year.

We're now applying the New Thumbnails to Profile and Group Widgets, and we want your help!

Note: This Grid will only apply to widgets that contain thumbs ONLY. Widgets such as the Custom Widget (which can include a mix of thumbs and text) will retain the current spacing.

Play around with them on your Profile, on Groups you may own, on Groups you may be in or watching, see how they work, and what doesn't work. Bugs can be reported in the New Thumbnail Grid for Profile Widgets project or as a comment on this article.

Please include browser info, OS information, screenshots, links, reproduction steps, and anything else you think will help describe your issue. Thank you in advance for your help!

Is this why the Newest Deviations widget thumbnails are broken?
Cuz rn it shows two thumbnails. When you edit the widget, there are three options: 1 row, 2 rows, and 3 rows, in which only the 2 rows selection is not grayed out. When I click 2 rows, something pops up that says Non-core members can only get 4 thumbnails, which makes no sense since only 2 thumbnails are shown. My selection for 2 rows doesnt even work. I made a journal asking if this was a bug or an update and one person said he sees 3 thumbnails instead of 2 on my page but I still see 2. I reported the bug, but I am highly disappointed atm and wish this will be resolved soon.

Hi there! For the past few months we have been slowly updating thumbnails on site to use the new grid system we announced way back in June of 2015 and launched to everyone for the main browse pages in May of 2016. This new grid was recently released to thumbnails in widgets on profile pages that showcase them automatically (such as your favourites and gallery widgets). As this new view uses Rows instead of a specific number of thumbnails, the amount of thumbnails you may see per row may vary depending on the width of your deviations and other similar factors.

We had this view in beta testing for a while and sadly it appears that some issues slipped through the cracks. We're terribly sorry for this. It seems that Freemium members were automatically served the single row view instead of the 2 row option you should have had available to you by default. Selecting any of the other options would then fire an error forcing you to undo your changes. We have since corrected these issues and you should now automatically be set to the 2 row option and the ability to chose the other options has been disabled unless you become a Core member. If you are still only seeing 1 row of thumbnails please edit your widget and save the changes. We believe having 2 rows by default will allow you to display more artwork than you were once able to –depending on size/shape you can often get more than the 4 you were allowed previously– while showcasing your artwork in a clean and orderly fashion.

not part of any design or beta team.
just landed on this post per chance after googling thumbs, deviantart and profile widget newest deviations...
i thought it was either a bug or maybe a design change related to the recent merger/buy out, and wrote a support request, still unanswered, before i found this post explaining what is probably happening.
but i do have an opinion, so here we go:

1) as a non core member i think only 2 thumbs suck big time, before there was a restriction but at least we had 4. i really hope the 2 are not permanent!! as an incentive to buy core it would create the opposite effect for me personally. like, eeew, dev sucks now, not wasting cash here.
2) the idea of the submit button in the widget is not the worst, but submitting is easily accessible with 1 click more in the top nav. the browse gallery button is totally superfluous with the gallery icon in the nav. and both buttons break the design of the widget badly. srsly, the "added feature" of having to click once or twice less to browse or submit is really not worth the eye sore under my thumbnails. make it optional if you really want those buttons, guys.

sorry for blurting my opinionz here, but yeah, didn't know where else to do it ;)

Hello! As mentioned above, this was an accidental bug. All non Core members should have seen 2 rows, as you should now see! Sorry for the confusion.

Oops, I didn't see Ikue's reply below! :P Anyway, thanks again!

thx for the answer! i just opened my DA and yess! now i see 2 rows. which is absolutely fine - a defined number (as long as it's over 2!!) or an undefined number (depending, as i see, on the size of the thumbs which seem proportional to the original pic, and as long as it isn't reduced to ridiculous 2 thumbs) doesn't really matter. just not 2 isolated little squares which imho make the widget quite useless, and i'm happy, even as a non core member. and you're right, there are more than 4 since the previous deviations before the 2 last ones were stamps.

so, thank you for your hard work! ^^
i know i tend to react quite aggressively to site changes, but i only made bad experiences up to now. this might be a first where i'm not disappointed ^^

Lol, at first it looked pretty weird the way it looks overall, and how the settings were different. But I like this weird way for some reason. :noes:

Okay, so I see that I saw similar thing happen like ikazon mentioned here the first time I tried changing the rows of thumbs. It breaks up the whole thing and shows up with way too many spaces. That really was the second jab at the weirdness the first time I looked at it. However, if you reload/refresh the page, it shows up as the correct number of rows. But the moment you try again it will have that 'break' again until you refresh the page again.

This is from going from 2 to 3 rows (random). Firefox 51.0.1. Win 10 Pro.
sta.sh/016avy6vwpts
Same for going from 3 to 1, 1 to 2, and, 1 to 3. All in random. Same for the new option as well.  They all have to be refreshed to show it the way they are supposed to be seen.

The whole random vs new does work and doesn't glitch when like showing new when random is chosen or vice versa.

Also, there's a lot of space between the thumbs and is very noticeable when there's some landscape/wide format thumbs and then portrait format thumbs. And gives the portrait format thumbs a very small overall view that looks like it's sort of jammed in there. And looks very tiny compared to the items beside it.

sta.sh/0cdg02798q Same. Firefox.

That also shows up when browsing through ipad mini safari browser as well.

Being able to see the title, artist, date, and those sort of stuff like before would be nice when hovering (and even not hovering because that's not possible when in ipad safari browsing. And takes away a lot of the information I want before I click.

Also, I think I quite like the Sitback's play feature. Previously it was in the middle and would float up and the arrows were there with play/pause. Now it's very much on the sides, so feels different. A good different. Though, I can't seem to find an option to go full screen with it? Because, I have said before, full screen Sitback feature option airplayed to a tv feels beautiful even in the previous version of the feature.

Since most have been commented with and reported before, I am including it as a comment here as indicated in the journal.

Have thumbnails gotten bigger in this update or did the script I've been using get outdated because of this change?

They should be about as big as Thumbs have been on Browse since the change something like 9 months ago. If they're bigger than THAT, might be something on your end.

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this; I tried posting a bug report but it kept saying it couldn't be saved and I assume it didn't submit? I'm super sorry if this is the wrong place!

Previously, the "Newest deviations" widget showed the four newest deviations, but now it's only showing two. When trying to edit it from 1 row* to 2 rows it displayed an error message, here's a screenshot: sta.sh/01ve8l81fio4
(My browser is Google Chrome and I'm viewing the site on a Surface.)

POSSIBLE BUG
I'm not sure if this is related because this problem persists even if you opt out of beta testing, but it did start when the new thumbnails in widgets were implemented: Sorting by Popular on a gallery no longer works; it shows deviations in random order, not sorted by number of faves.

I was waiting for it to go away on its own, but it's been like this for a few days already.

the one thing i miss about the old style is being able to put my cursor over the thumbnail and seeing the date the deviation was posted.  that was rather helpful imho. ♥

Thank you for the detailed screenshots!

I'm curious about the third row on each of them. We've changed some things in the past couple days. The expectation is that the third row stretches all the way across. In "Newest Deviation," the 2nd and 3rd rows are jagged. In Faves Newest, the 3rd row just has 1 lonely deviation. In Faves Random, they're in a neat square, but it doesn't extend the full width of the box.

Does this still happen to you?

Haven't noticed any problems. :) A small thing I've noticed about the grid in general though is if the thumb is too narrow it won't tell me what the views/comment count is. And it's a problem all around that I can't easily hover over a deviation to see when it was posted. All things I can live with, really. :la:

I'm so glad you updated the Sit back option. Just add a full screen view of it, then it'll be A OK.

As for the other options, it's....a little different from what I am use to. I like the new thumbs of course, but the tiny thumbnails had better organization. And the staff who says, title and artist art not important to look at, go to a museum. The title and artist is just as important as the picture. But I guess my opinion doesn't matter pft.

It also seems on the new thumbnails, the longer the artist name is, the more you cannot see certain information such as the faves and comments, when it was more accessible in the past. Yeah sure I can click on the thumbnail, but that's just adding an extra step some people don't like to do. PLUS I WOULD RATHER HOVER OVER A PIECE TO SEE THE WHITE BAR SHOWING THE TITLE, DATE, AND ARTIST. This why I don't DD suggest anymore. You made it even less accessible to tell without all the extra clicking.

So yeah. It's ok. Not great, but ok. Love the SitBack Slideshow, but the thumbnails themselves for organization, I wish it could be assembled a bit better. Hopefully when you collaborate with WIX, there will be more options a for customization.

EDIT: Just tried zooming out to 50%, small thumb 1 row is indeed showing in 1 row. Two rows are two rows, but with empty space at the end of the second row. THree rows, three rows, but again a gap at the end of 3rd row. Huge thumbnail looks the same as in the picture below. Slideshow looks stretched. But, again, since I can't operate on this level of zoom, it's not optimal for me at all.

Google Chrome, version 56.0.2924.87 (32-bit), Windows 8.1

I show my own works in customized widgets, so here's how my Favorites widget looked like when playing around:

First of all, when I took these screenshots, there were LESS thumbs showing in each, now even the setting I had liked during taking these screenshots looks iffy to me. :B So I guess I'm taking more screenshots. Maybe it's because of how much I zoom in and out, I don't know. I usually keep zoom on 100% because I'm half-blind even with glasses on. But I don't know... It seems to happen every time I try the big thumbnail, the other options start showing more and more deviations in the Favorites widget. I don't know for sure, I'll try keep an eye on it. But at around 5:15pm GMT+2 this is what I got.

1. Small thumbnail, 1 row
Favourites Thumbs 1 by Daghrgenzeen

2. Small thumbnail, 2 rows (the one I originally liked)
Favourites Thumbs 2 by Daghrgenzeen

3. Small thumbnail, 3 rows
Favourites Thumbs 3 by Daghrgenzeen

4. Big thumbnail - had to zoom out as far as I could. :'D
Favourites Thumbs 4 by Daghrgenzeen

5. Never liked / needed the SitBack option, but so far it looks like the best out of these other options. :s

When I tried the Sitback Slideshow, I set it to random, and it still displayed the newest deviations. Newest Sitback is fine now, though some deviations were overlapping.

Small thumbnails, 1 row, random: sta.sh/0jqohsdpdd3
Small thumbnails, 1 row, newest: sta.sh/01ysw10566u8
Small thumbs, 2 rows, random: sta.sh/027malvl7dxt
Small thumbs, 2 rows, newest: sta.sh/0dxkrgr21dn (vertical layout)
Small thumbs, 3 rows, random: sta.sh/01t3sf0cm1zf
Small thumbs, 3 rows, newest: sta.sh/05tbrscvr8r
Big thumbs, 1 row, random: All thumbs, all vertical
Big thumbs, 1 row, newest: Same as above, but in newest
Big thumbs, 2 rows, newest: Same again as above
Looks like this: sta.sh/01swoprmq7p (zoomed out, but is still the same zoomed full size)

(Big thumbs seem to be the main issue)

Using: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/56.0.2924.87 Safari/537.36

Hey there! The Huge thumbs issue should be fixed now. As for the small thumbs in 1 row that are not in 1 row, that might need a refresh. It should work fine now. You've changed your widgets to sitbacks for testing, but if you change back, I can see if it needs additional work! Thank you!

I was playing with a favorite collection folder only. :P

:bulletblue: Same as for other people, instead of one huge thumbnail, I have several thumbnails.

:bulletblue: For the one raw of the deviations, for around 2 first minutes it was always making two rows, adding the last deviation from the row to the second one, leaving a huge gap on the right part of the widget. After some playing with the options it eventually start to work fine :B But then, I changed for Slideshow and left for 3-4 hours. Now when I started to play again with the options, this issue is back.

This is how it looks for ONE row:
Zrzut ekranu 2017-02-24 15.01.52 by UszatyArbuz Zrzut ekranu 2017-02-24 15.02.23 by UszatyArbuz Zrzut ekranu 2017-02-24 15.02.32 by UszatyArbuz

And for TWO rows:
Zrzut ekranu 2017-02-24 15.02.44 by UszatyArbuz

Artworks were randomized as I checked this option.

:bulletblue: For the SitBack Slideshow, it always displays artworks from the newest, even if I check the Random option.
Moreover, for some time it was displaying title and author on the left side, but then it changed to left and it's still like this, so I guess it's already fixed. I managed to take a screenshot though if you'd be interested:

Playing with my Featured Gallery widget on my personal profile, I noticed a few different issues.

1. Widget lets me try to fav my own Literature deviations.  If I click the star, it just spins and spins forever (not a valid action).
Settings: Featured folder, small thumbnails, 3 rows, Newest
Fav-my-own by indyana

2. Most of the small thunbnails do not show the comments/favs icons.  Too narrow?  Should that wrap so it's in view...?
Settings: Featured folder, small thumbnails, 3 rows, Newest
No-info by indyana

3. When I switch to the big thumbnails, I get this: still 9 deviations, tiny literature, big art thumbnails, and the info is all underneath again (is this supposed to match the small display, where the info appears when you hover over the big thumbnail...?)
Settings: Featured folder, hugh thumbnail (prev. using small, 3 rows, Newest)

1. You should not be able to see the star icon for your own works. This doesn't seem to be an issue with this particular test as it extends to anywhere your own literature thumbnails are displayed. I've made the developer team aware. :)

2. I'm afraid thumbnails that are too narrow will not show the fav/comment info. There were many tests done for various layouts before removing it was decided to be the best option. I'm afraid at this time wrapping them isn't something we will support. Should a better solution become available we will consider it. Again though, this isn't a part of this particular test and extends to all thumbnails that are on the new grid system.

3. The big thumbnail issue was reported by a few others in the comments here. Our developers are aware and working on a solution. Should you come across any further bugs to do with this feature please report them here. :)

Great, thanks for taking a look. On mobile, the thumbnails do a great job of truncating/squishing to show the comment/fav icons, so maybe some of that could be used in the future on the desktop site to make the thumbnails more forgiving. :)
